Using a protein extracted from naturally occurring bacterium, clostridium botulinum.
What causes wrinkles?
Whenever you laugh, frown, concentrate or squint your facial muscles contract, causing wrinkles and lines to form. As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and those lines can deepen and become permanently etched on your face. Frown lines between the eyebrows can become particularly noticeable at a relatively young age, making you look angry and worried even when you are not.
What does wrinkle treatment involve?
Treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure which takes around ten minutes. After you have discussed with your doctor the effects you desire, the doctor will first examine you to confirm if treatment with the protein is right for you. The doctor will then inject tiny amounts of this protein using a very fine needle into the specific facial muscles underlying the frown lines. It usually takes up to 5 injections between the eyebrows for an effective treatment. The procedure causes minimal discomfort and you may resume normal activities very soon after the treatment.
How long does the treatment last?
The initial effects of the treatment will begin to appear in 2 to 3 days but the maximum effect may take from 1 to 3 weeks to become established. The effects can last from 3 to 4 months and may last longer with repeated treatments over time.
Are there any side effects or risks?
The safety and effectiveness of this substance in the treatment of glabellar lines have been evaluated in a comprehensive programme of clinical studies and are documented in the approval product information. As with most medications, along with its desired effects, this protein can also cause unwanted effects. After the procedure you many notice some swelling or redness around the injection points, which usually settles after a few minutes. Occasionally you may develop a small temporary bruise at some of the injection sites. A mild headache may also occur for 1 to 2 days. A transient eyelid droop may develop but this is an uncommon event. Skin rashes including rashes at the site of the injection have been reported rarely and reports of itching are uncommon. There are unlikely to be any long term complications from the use of Botoxin in the treatment of wrinkles.
